The sterile scent of antiseptic and something faintly floral, like wilting lilies, clung to the air. Elara traced the rim of her teacup, the porcelain cool beneath her fingertips. Across the polished mahogany desk, Dr. Alistair Finch offered a smile that was as practiced as it was reassuring. It crinkled the corners of his eyes, kind eyes, she’d always thought, eyes that had once held the steady gaze of a guide through the fog of her own mind. Now, they seemed to hold something else, a knowing that prickled at the edges of her awareness.

“You seem troubled, Elara,” he said, his voice a low, comforting murmur, the kind that could soothe a frightened child. He leaned forward, his hands clasped loosely on his desk. The afternoon sun, slanting through the blinds, cast long, striped shadows across the room, dappling his face in and out of light.

“It’s… the feeling,” Elara began, her voice hesitant. She struggled to articulate the amorphous dread, the persistent hum of unease that had become her constant companion. “Like a shadow, just out of sight. Or a whisper I can’t quite decipher.” She touched her nose, a phantom ache thrumming beneath the skin. It had been a dull throb all morning, a familiar, unwelcome guest.
