The air in the old observatory was thick with the scent of dust and decay, a musty perfume that clung to Elara like a second skin. Moonlight, fractured by the grimy lenses of forgotten telescopes, laid ghostly patterns on the warped wooden floor. This place, stripped of its celestial purpose, felt like a perfect echo of her own mind – vast, yet disorienting, filled with the ghosts of what once was. She’d found the address tucked away in Silas’s worn journal, a scribbled designation that had felt like a desperate, final plea. Now, standing here, the silence pressing in, she understood why. This was a labyrinth of a different sort, a place where truth and illusion could easily become indistinguishable.

She hadn’t expected him to be here. Or perhaps, a part of her had always known he would be. Dr. Alistair Finch stood by the largest telescope, his silhouette sharp against the faint glow of the city lights filtering through the domed roof. He turned, a slow, measured movement, and his smile, once a source of comfort, now felt like a predatory baring of teeth.

“Elara,” he said, his voice a silken caress that sent a shiver down her spine. “I wondered when you’d find your way here. Such a… poetic choice of venue.”
