The scent of old paper and lemon polish, once a comforting balm, now felt like a shroud. Elara sat in Dr. Finch’s study, the familiar, worn leather of the armchair doing little to ground her. Sunlight, usually a cheerful presence, streamed through the tall windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, each one a tiny, mocking reminder of the disarray within her mind. She had come here, to the place that had been a sanctuary for so long, seeking answers, and instead, she had found the architect of her torment.

It wasn't a sudden, blinding revelation, but a slow, insidious dawning, like a bruise blooming beneath the skin. Each memory, once a jumbled mosaic, began to snap into a horrifying clarity. Dr. Finch’s gentle questions, his soothing reassurances, the way he’d gently touch her arm when she grew agitated – it all coalesced into a chilling pattern. He hadn't been healing her; he had been meticulously dismantling her.

She remembered the sessions, the hushed tones, the careful probing. He’d always steered her away from the sharp edges of her distress, offering comforting narratives that smoothed over the cracks. “It’s the trauma, Elara,” he’d murmur, his voice a silken thread. “Your mind is protecting itself. We just need to help it unpack, gently.” Gently. The word tasted like ash in her mouth.
