Chapter 11
The Broken Mirror
Elara finds a damaged mirror, its reflection distorted. She sees herself, but the face seems alien. The fragmented memories coalesce around a single, traumatic incident. The nose injury feels acutely real.
The antique shop was a hushed sanctuary, a labyrinth of forgotten lives and whispered histories. Sunlight, thick with dust motes, slanted through the grimy windowpanes, illuminating stacks of yellowed books, tarnished silver, and the skeletal remains of furniture. Elara traced the chipped porcelain of a teacup, the cool ceramic a stark contrast to the usual thrumming heat behind her eyes. She’d come here on a whim, a desperate attempt to outrun the persistent echo of her own thoughts, the swirling fog that seemed to cling to her like damp wool.
She was drawn, as if by an unseen current, to a back corner, where a collection of mirrors lay propped against a wall. They were of all shapes and sizes, their frames ornate and faded, their surfaces clouded with the patina of age. One, in particular, caught her eye. It was large, oval, framed in dark, carved wood that depicted entwined vines and thorns. But the glass itself was the anomaly. It was not merely dusty or smudged; it was fractured, a spiderweb of cracks radiating from a central point, distorting the reflection into a mosaic of fragmented selves.
Hesitantly, Elara stepped closer. Her reflection swam into view, a distorted caricature. Her eyes, usually a clear, steady blue, seemed to swim in different directions, her nose a jagged line, her mouth a contorted grimace. It was her face, undeniably, but it felt like a stranger’s. The familiar ache behind her nose, a dull throb that had become a constant companion, flared with an almost electric intensity. It wasn't just a sensation; it was a memory, a phantom limb of pain reaching out from the fractured glass.
