The air in the chamber had thickened over the years, a heavy, stagnant blanket that clung to Elara’s skin like a second, unwanted layer. It was a scent composed of damp earth, stale breath, and the faint, metallic tang of despair. Time here was not measured by the sun’s passage or the moon’s phases, but by the rhythmic beat of her own heart, a drumbeat that had grown weary and slow. She had lost count of the birthdays, her own and theirs, the milestones blurring into an indistinguishable tapestry of grey. Eighteen had been a lifetime ago, a fragile memory of sunlight and laughter that now felt like a dream dreamt by another.

The first was Lyra, her eldest, born in the suffocating silence, a tiny cry that had ripped through the quiet like a shard of glass. Elara had held her, a fragile vessel of hope and terror, her body still aching, her spirit raw. Then came Anya, and then Willow, their births a procession of pain and fierce, unyielding love. Elara had named them in whispers, each name a prayer, a defiance against the darkness that sought to consume them. She remembered the weight of each small body against her chest, the desperate need to shield them from the reality of their existence, a reality she herself was still struggling to comprehend.

Then came the twins, Fern and Ivy, their arrival a double burden and a double solace. Elara’s body, once her own, had become a vessel for his will, a cruel instrument of his obsession. Yet, within that violation, life had bloomed, a defiant, tenacious green against the barren rock. She had learned to nurture, to soothe, to protect with a ferocity that surprised even herself. Her children were her world, her universe, each breath she took a testament to their existence.
