The air, thin and cool, was a revelation. It carried scents Elara had long forgotten, a tapestry woven from damp earth, the distant murmur of unseen life, and something else, something sharp and sweet that pricked at a buried memory. She stood on the precipice of a world that was both achingly familiar and terrifyingly alien. Twenty years. Twenty years had bled away in the suffocating darkness of the earth, each day a slow erosion of her former self. Now, bathed in the hesitant light of a dawn she hadn't witnessed since she was a girl on the cusp of womanhood, Elara felt like a ghost returned to a life that had moved on without her.
Beside her, her children stirred, a rustle of movement in the tall, dew-kissed grass. Lyra, ever the vanguard, was already a few steps ahead, her small hand reaching out to touch a blade of grass as if it were spun from moonlight. Caspian, his broad shoulders hunched with a familiar protectiveness, kept a watchful eye on his sisters, his gaze sweeping the unfamiliar landscape with a practiced caution that belied his age. The younger ones, the twins, Willow and Wren, clung to Elara’s skirts, their eyes wide with a mixture of awe and apprehension. Even the youngest, little Iris, only a few years old and born into the dim glow of their subterranean prison, blinked owlishly at the vast expanse of sky.
"Mother," Lyra’s voice, a clear bell in the quiet morning, broke the spell. "What is this place?"
