Behind her, a shuffling procession of small feet echoed the frantic beat of her own heart. Lyra, her eldest, her beacon, walked closest, her small hand a constant, reassuring weight in Elara’s. Then came the others, a constellation of fear and burgeoning hope, their hushed whispers a fragile melody against the oppressive silence of the earth.

This was the labyrinth, a twisting, turning testament to her father’s meticulous madness. The passage Lyra had discovered, a mere hairline fracture in the stone, had opened into this sprawling, subterranean network. It was a place designed for oblivion, for secrets to fester and souls to wither. But now, it was their escape route, a treacherous path leading away from the gilded cage that had held them captive for twenty years.

“Are we going the right way, Mama?” a small voice piped up from the rear, a hesitant thread of fear woven into its tone. It was Anya, always the most sensitive, her eyes wide and reflecting the meager light from the oil lamp Elara carried.
