Under the cloak of manufactured normalcy, the family prepares. Each child has a role, a task in the perilous journey that lies ahead, guided by Elara's desperate hope.
The flickering lamp cast long, dancing shadows that distorted the familiar contours of their underground world. It was a world Elara had meticulously crafted, a fragile illusion of normalcy built upon a foundation of terror and enforced silence. Tonight, however, the pretense was thinner than the stale air, stretched taut by the nascent thrill of a plan, a desperate gamble born from two decades of suffocating darkness.
Elara moved through the cavernous living space, her steps measured, her gaze sweeping over her children. They were gathered near the hearth, their faces illuminated by the fire’s dying embers, a tableau of forced serenity. Lyra, her eldest, sat beside her, her fingers tracing the worn patterns of a blanket, her eyes sharp and alert, missing nothing. Beside her, Caspian, the boy who carried the weight of his singularity with a quiet stoicism that belied his years, fiddled with a loose thread on his tunic, his brow furrowed in concentration. The younger girls, a kaleidoscope of Elara’s own stolen youth, were huddled together, their hushed whispers a constant, low murmur that Elara had learned to filter, to compartmentalize, so that the essential sounds, the sounds of them, could always reach her.
“The water skins are filled,” Lyra murmured, her voice barely disturbing the stillness. “And the dried fruit is packed, as much as we could spare without raising suspicion.”
