Anya’s voice, usually a melodic hum of curiosity, now carried a sharp, insistent edge. She stood, her parka a splash of deep sapphire against the stark white of the snow, her gaze fixed on the silent, hulking forms of their disabled electrical snowmobiles. “It’s not random,” she stated, her words slicing through the tense quiet that had descended after the catastrophic surge. “It’s responding. To us.”

Aris Thorne, hunched over a diagnostic panel that stubbornly refused to flicker to life, scrubbed a gloved hand over his tired eyes. His mind, a finely tuned instrument of logic and data, recoiled from the very notion. “Responding, Anya? To what, precisely? Atmospheric pressure? Geomagnetic fluctuations? We’ve run every conceivable test, and the only anomaly is the energy signature itself.” He tapped a finger against the cold metal of the panel. “This is physics, not philosophy.”

Lena, her usually bright eyes clouded with frustration, knelt beside a snowmobile’s exposed engine housing. Sparks had spat from it moments ago, an angry, final farewell before it too succumbed to the inexplicable force. “Dr. Thorne is right, Anya. It’s an energy surge, immense and powerful, but… responding? How?” She pulled a wrench from her belt, the metallic clink sounding unnaturally loud. “I can’t even get a diagnostic reading. It’s like everything’s been wiped clean, or… overloaded to the point of oblivion.” Her voice wavered, a familiar tremor of self-doubt creeping in. She hated feeling this helpless, this inadequate, especially when Aris was watching.
