Layla calls an Uber to the Highway 9 Motel, where Summer shares the full story of her forced marriage offer and escape thirty years ago, including the brutal cost of losing her family. Layla realizes her father has been tracking her phone, and when she returns home she finds Marcus Webb waiting in the living room, having been summoned by William.
Layla didn't ask her mother for the car keys. The risk of her father hearing the engine, of questions, of a scene, was too high. She pulled out her phone and ordered an Uber, the app showing a car six minutes away. She slipped through the side gate and walked to the corner of Maple and Third, standing under a streetlamp as the afternoon light began to slant.
The Uber was a white Corolla driven by a woman with a braid and a quiet nod. Layla gave the address and sat in the back, watching the houses roll past. The motel was on the old highway, a single-story building with a flickering vacancy sign and a gravel parking lot. Summer's rented sedan sat outside room 7.
Layla knocked. The door opened immediately, as if Summer had been waiting by it.
