A Sudden Downpour
The sky darkened abruptly. Rain lashed down, turning the forest floor into a muddy mess. A strong gust of wind separated Whiskers from Squeaky. Panic fluttered in her chest as she realized she was alone.
The air, which had been so sweet and alive with the chirping of unseen birds and the rustle of leaves, began to grow heavy. A strange stillness settled over the Whispering Woods, a hush that felt more like a held breath than a peaceful pause. I tilted my head, my whiskers twitching, trying to decipher the shift in the atmosphere. Squeaky, scampering beside me, paused too, his bright eyes wide with a sudden unease. He nudged my flank with his nose, a silent question.
"It feels…different, doesn't it?" I murmured, my voice barely a whisper against the growing silence. The dappled sunlight that had danced through the canopy moments before seemed to be dimming, as if a giant, grey blanket was being pulled across the sky. A faint rumble, distant at first, vibrated through the earth beneath my paws, a low growl that sent a shiver down my spine.
Squeaky let out a little squeak, a sound of apprehension that mirrored the flutter in my own chest. We were so engrossed in the changing sky, in the unnatural quiet, that we almost didn't notice the first fat drops of rain splattering on the leaves above us, dark circles blooming on the green. Then, as if a celestial faucet had been turned on full blast, the heavens opened.
