The world outside the familiar warmth of my home was a dizzying, vibrant tapestry of greens and browns. Sunlight, dappled and shy, filtered through a canopy so thick it felt like a living roof. Each leaf, each blade of grass, seemed to hum with a life I’d only ever glimpsed through the windowpane. My paws, usually so sure on the soft rugs of our living room, felt strangely clumsy on the uneven earth, a nervous tremor running through them. The map, crinkled and ancient, felt like a heavy secret in my small paws, its inked lines a promise and a challenge.

This was the Whispering Woods, and it was more alive, more *much* than I had ever imagined. A shadow, long and slinky, detached itself from the trunk of a massive oak and stretched itself across my path. I froze, my fur bristling slightly. It was a fox, its coat the color of a sunset, its eyes like polished amber. It regarded me with a languid curiosity, a faint smile playing on its muzzle.
