The darkness pressed in, a thick, velvety blanket that smelled of damp earth and something ancient, something that whispered of long-forgotten things. Each tiny sound I made seemed to magnify, bouncing off unseen walls and returning to me as distorted echoes. My own paws, usually so sure and silent, now sounded like clumsy thuds, each one a betrayal of my presence in this echoing void. It was a strange symphony of my own making, a chorus of fear amplified by the very air around me.

Every drip of water from the unseen ceiling sounded like a monstrous footstep, every rustle of unseen things like a lurking predator. My whiskers twitched, trying to make sense of the air currents, to find a path through this sensory maze. They brushed against something cold and slick, and I jumped back with a startled hiss, my heart hammering against my ribs. It was just a damp rock face, glistening with moisture. But in the darkness, it had felt like a grasping claw.
