The air in the small cafe hung thick with the aroma of burnt sugar and stale coffee, a familiar scent that usually soothed my frayed nerves. Today, though, it felt like a suffocating blanket. I sat at a corner table, the worn wood cool beneath my fingertips, watching the ebb and flow of faces passing by the window. Each one, a story. Most, I could sift through like sand, the ordinary grains of everyday life. But some… some felt different. They pulsed with a hidden current, a resonance that vibrated deep within me.

It’s like a sixth sense, this knowing. A knowing that bypasses the polite smiles, the practiced words, the carefully constructed facades. I see the truth in people’s eyes, not just the surface sheen, but the depths beneath. The flicker of fear, the ember of hope, the buried shard of pain. And the bullshit? Oh, the bullshit. It’s a whole different frequency, a discordant hum that sets my teeth on edge. It’s loud, obnoxious, and usually accompanied by a greasy grin and eyes that dart too much. I’ve learned to trust that hum. It’s saved me more times than I can count, a silent alarm bell ringing in the hollows of my soul.

A woman approached my table, her footsteps tentative, her gaze searching. She wore a worn cardigan, her hair pulled back in a loose bun, and her shoulders were hunched, as if carrying an invisible weight. When her eyes met mine, I felt it – that familiar thrum. Not the discordant buzz of deception, but a clearer, steadier note. It was the sound of someone who had walked through fire, someone who carried scars, but hadn’t let them break her.
