The hum of the city was a constant, low thrum beneath the surface of everything, a reminder of the world that continued to spin, oblivious to the quiet war being waged in its underbelly. I sat in the dimly lit back room of a nondescript cafe, the scent of stale coffee and desperation clinging to the air. Across from me, Maya, The Sentinel, tapped away at her tablet, her brow furrowed in concentration. Her fingers danced across the screen, a blur of motion that belied the stillness of her gaze. She was a creature of logic, of facts, a stark contrast to the swirling vortex of intuition and raw feeling that often guided me. But that was why we worked, why we were a force.

"Anything?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper, a habit born from years of needing to keep my thoughts contained, lest they be snatched and twisted.

Maya sighed, a soft exhalation of frustration. "It’s like trying to catch smoke, Miguelito. The digital footprints are there, fragmented, scrambled. They’re good. Very good. But they’re not God.” She looked up, her eyes, usually so sharp and focused, held a flicker of something akin to unease. "This Shadow Weaver, as you call him… he’s not just some street-level scammer. This is organized. Sophisticated. They have resources I haven't seen deployed outside of state-sponsored cyber warfare.”
