The hum of the server room was a low, constant thrum, a mechanical heartbeat in the dead of night. Dust motes danced in the single cone of light cast by my desk lamp, illuminating the glowing lines of code on my monitor. I traced a finger over the cool glass, the lines blurring into an abstract tapestry of defense. Each firewall, each encryption, was a brick in the wall I was building, a bulwark against the shadows that had once consumed me. They called it paranoia, the whispers in the dark, the feeling of eyes always watching. But I knew better. I knew the weight of that gaze, the chill of it seeping into your bones. And now, I was building a sanctuary, a place where those whispers would be heard, where the unseen would be brought into the light.

A soft chime from my laptop announced an incoming message. The Luminary. Even his digital signature felt warm, like sunlight on a cold day.

“Sentinel,” his message read, “you there? Need your eyes on this. Something’s not right.”
