The city hummed a low, restless tune that night, a symphony of distant sirens and closer whispers. Rain slicked the streets, turning neon signs into bleeding watercolors. I sat by the window, the condensation a canvas for my breath, each exhalation a ghost of the fire within. They called me names, painted me as a phantom, a madman. But the truth, like the persistent ache in my bones, was undeniable. It was a truth etched in every betrayal, every lie, every moment I was told I was overthinking, that I was crazy.

"You still watchin' the rain, Lu?" The Sentinel's voice, a smooth counterpoint to the night's discord, cut through my thoughts. She stood in the doorway, a silhouette against the dim hallway light, her laptop bag slung over her shoulder.

I turned, a ghost of a smile touching my lips. "Someone has to, Sentinel. Someone has to see the patterns in the water, the stories it tells."
