Sarah Cascady watched Harry Strictler from across the bustling common room, a faint frown etching itself between her brows. He was a creature of calculated movements, a predator disguised as a scholar, and she felt it in her bones. He wasn't just ambitious; he was architecting something, laying down dominoes with an unnerving precision that made her own carefully constructed scientific theories feel… simplistic.

Harry was leaning against the cool, polished marble of the student lounge wall, a practiced nonchalance about him. Terry Amanda, his girlfriend, was perched beside him, her attention a laser beam fixed on his face as he spoke. Even from this distance, Sarah could discern the subtle shift in Harry’s posture, the way his eyes, usually sharp and analytical, softened almost imperceptibly when he looked at Terry. It was a tenderness that Sarah found both genuine and, paradoxically, another layer of his intricate facade. He was so adept at appearing sincere, at weaving a spell of trust around those he chose to keep close.

But it was the other interactions that truly pricked Sarah's suspicions. The way he’d spoken to Kelly Carlson earlier that morning, a hushed conversation by the lockers that had left Kelly looking both relieved and utterly dependent. Sarah had caught snippets – "I'll make sure no one touches you," "You're safe with me, Kelly." The promise, cloaked in concern, had the unmistakable ring of a carefully placed trap. Kelly, still visibly raw from whatever ghosts haunted her past, had nodded, her eyes wide with a desperate hope that Sarah found heartbreakingly naive. Harry had a way of finding the cracks in people, the vulnerabilities they tried to hide, and then filling them with his own brand of solace, a solace that always seemed to come with an invisible leash.
