The air vibrated with an unspoken promise, a hum that tickled the very tips of my ears. It was the kind of hum that precedes great deeds, the sort that whispers of destinies being forged in the crucible of ordinary afternoons. Juliana stood beside me, her arms crossed, a familiar, almost imperceptible sigh escaping her lips. She was the anchor to my soaring kite, the practical voice that occasionally grounded my flights of fancy. But today, even her usual skepticism seemed to soften, a flicker of curiosity dancing in her eyes.

And then there was Negra. My loyal shadow, my four-legged comrade-in-arms. Her sable coat gleamed in the dappled sunlight filtering through the window, her tail a gentle pendulum of anticipation. She knew. Oh, she knew something was afoot. The scent of adventure, even if it was just the scent of Mama’s slightly-too-strong perfume as she’d given us our instructions, was enough to set her tail thumping a rhythm against the worn rug.

"Right then, Juliana," I announced, my voice resonating with the gravitas befitting a hero on the cusp of a monumental undertaking. I adjusted the imaginary epaulets on my shoulders, a habit I’d cultivated over years of epic sagas played out in my mind. "The hour is upon us. The fate of… well, something… rests on our shoulders."
