Chapter 19
A Feast of Remembrance
Amy hosts a gathering, sharing a feast of her recreated pioneer dishes with friends and family.
The late afternoon sun, the color of warm honey, slanted through the windows of my little kitchen, painting stripes across the worn linoleum. It was a good light, a light that felt earned, a light that spoke of days spent in diligent, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately rewarding labor. Today, that light was a spotlight, illuminating the culmination of my journey, a feast spread across the sturdy oak table that had been my grandmother’s. Eunice and Coco were due any minute, and a flutter of nervous excitement, a familiar companion these past few months, danced in my stomach.
The table was a patchwork of history. In the center, the pièce de résistance: the Dried Apple Stack Cake, its layers a deep, burnished gingerbread, softened and melded by the spiced apple filling. It sat like a proud monument, a testament to patience and the slow magic of time. Beside it, a bowl of Chuck Wagon Beans, dark and rich, their smoky aroma still clinging to the air, promised hearty sustenance. A platter of golden Johnnycakes, still warm from the cast iron, waited patiently, their crisp edges a delightful contrast to their tender interiors. Nearby, a small dish held a scattering of fried mush, its edges perfectly browned, ready to be drizzled with molasses, a comforting echo of countless frontier breakfasts. And for a touch of brightness, a small bowl of pickled beets, their jewel-toned juice staining the ceramic, offered a sharp counterpoint to the richness.
My hands, still faintly dusted with flour, trembled slightly as I arranged a sprig of parsley – a concession to modern presentation, I’ll admit – on the beans. It felt like a grand unveiling, a performance of sorts, but not one I was performing alone. Every dish on this table was a collaboration, a conversation across time with my grandmother, and with the countless women who had nourished their families with such ingenuity and grit.
