Chapter 4
L'Épreuve de la Distance et le Retour des Doutes
La distance crée des tensions et des doutes, mais le soutien indéfectible de Chimel aide Christ à faire face à une crise familiale imprévue, révélant un secret de son propre passé.
The metallic tang of stale coffee clung to Christ’s tongue, a familiar companion to the late-night reports spread across his temporary desk. The sterile hum of the air conditioning unit in his rented Parisian apartment was a poor substitute for the comforting silence of his old flat, or, more accurately, the soft sound of Chimel breathing beside him. It had been three months since he'd moved to Paris for the promotion, three months of video calls and whispered goodnights, three months where the vibrant tapestry of their new love had begun to fray at the edges, stretched thin by the miles between them.

"Long day, Christ," she’d said, a sigh escaping before she could catch it. "I’m just… exhausted." He’d wanted to press, to ask if it was more than just exhaustion, but the words had died in his throat. The fear of being a demanding presence, a nagging voice from afar, often silenced him. He missed her, yes, but he also worried. Worried that this distance was doing more than just testing their patience; it was creating chasms.
A notification pinged on his laptop. An email from his mother. He opened it, a knot tightening in his stomach. His mother rarely emailed; her preferred method of communication was a lengthy, rambling phone call. The subject line read: "Your father."
