The hum of the hive had always been Barnaby’s world, a symphony of purpose that usually left him feeling like a rogue note, always a beat too fast, a flicker too wild. But today, the hum felt different. It was softer, more melodic, a gentle thrumming of contentment that seemed to weave through the hexagonal chambers and along the sun-drenched corridors. Today, the hive was celebrating.

Barnaby, perched on the edge of the main chamber, felt a strange lightness in his antennae. He’d spent so many days feeling like a clumsy bumblebee in a world of perfectly tuned drones, his energy a whirlwind that scattered pollen and disrupted the delicate dance of honeycomb construction. He’d often watched his hive mates, like Buzz, his wings a blur of efficient movement, their focus as sharp as a bee’s sting, and felt a pang of envy. He wanted to be like them, to be steady, to be reliable. He’d always secretly worried that he was just too much, too loud, too fast, destined to always be on the outside of the hive’s intricate workings.

Elder Beatrice, her wings the colour of aged parchment, her eyes like polished amber, nudged him gently with a leg. “You look thoughtful, little Barnaby,” she buzzed, her voice a low, resonant murmur. “Is the celebration not to your liking?”
