The sky, which had been a cheerful, boundless blue just moments before, turned a bruised and angry purple. A low rumble, deeper and more menacing than any Barnaby had ever heard, vibrated through the very foundations of the hive. Then, the wind began to howl, a wild, untamed creature tearing through the familiar, ordered world. Rain followed, not in gentle drops, but in furious, pounding sheets that lashed against the honeycomb walls.

Inside the hive, a ripple of panic spread. Younger bees, their wings still a little clumsy, huddled together, their tiny antennae quivering. Older bees, usually so steady, buzzed with a nervous energy that mirrored Barnaby’s own worst days. The precious nectar stored in the cells sloshed precariously, and the delicate, newly built honeycomb seemed to groan under the pressure of the storm.

Barnaby felt it too, the familiar, frantic thrumming in his own chest. His legs twitched, his wings felt restless, and his mind, usually a kaleidoscope of fleeting thoughts, threatened to splinter into a thousand buzzing fragments. He wanted to dart, to buzz louder, to somehow fight against the chaos that was erupting around them. But then, a memory, sharp and clear as a dewdrop, surfaced. Elder Beatrice’s quiet voice, her gentle hum, the feeling of stillness settling over him like a soft blanket.
