The afternoon sun bled through the kitchen window, painting a stripe of gold across the worn linoleum. I sat at the table with my mother, my rose-tinted glasses perched on my nose, their gentle hue softening the sharp edges of the world. She was folding laundry, her hands moving in a rhythm I had memorized—lift, snap, fold, stack. But today those hands trembled, a slight tremor I would have missed without the glasses. The pink light smoothed it into a kind of dance.
“Mama,” I said, “why do you hum that song?”
She stopped. Her eyes, the same shade of tired blue, met mine. “It’s an old lullaby,” she said. “My mother sang it to me when she was scared.”
