Gruzdas and Musmere enjoy a lazy, playful morning after their victory. A minor mishap with the kiln leads to laughter and a new pottery experiment. Their idyllic day is interrupted by a visit from a neighbor bearing a peculiar gift—a box of preserved mushrooms—and a rumor about strange lights in the old grove. The chapter ends with Gruzdas and Musmere deciding to investigate the grove at dusk, setting up a gentle mystery.
The morning light slipped through the curtains in thin, golden ribbons. Gruzdas woke to the smell of coffee and the sound of Musmere humming in the kitchen. He lay still for a moment, letting the warmth of the blanket and the quiet joy of the day before settle into his bones. The hearing was over. The land was safe. And she was here.
He pulled on his shirt and padded into the kitchen. Musmere stood at the stove, her wild hair tied back with a strip of cloth, stirring a pot of oatmeal. She wore one of his old flannel shirts over her own clothes, the sleeves rolled up to her elbows.
"Good morning," she said without turning. "You sleep well?"
