They reach the map's 'X' and find not gold, but a trove of old letters and mementos. The 'treasure' tells a forgotten story of Brownsville's resilience and the enduring power of love. Lily and Tom realize their greatest discovery is each other.
The old rowboat, its paint peeling like sunburnt skin, finally nudged against the muddy bank. My heart thumped a rhythm against my ribs, a nervous drumbeat that echoed the gentle lapping of water against the hull. Beside me, Tom’s breathing was a little steadier, though I could still feel the tension in his shoulders. We’d followed the tattered map, guided by the cryptic scrawls of Old Man Hemlock, all the way to this quiet, forgotten bend in the Brownsville River. The “X” marked on the map wasn’t a grand, imposing symbol, but a small, faded cross etched into the parchment, almost lost in the faded ink.
“This is it,” I whispered, my voice barely disturbing the stillness. “The spot.”
Tom leaned over, his gaze scanning the dense foliage that crowded the river’s edge. “Looks like any other part of the river to me, Lily. Are you sure?”
