The air in the mountain village was thin and sharp, carrying the scent of pine and woodsmoke. It clung to Gu Chen’s robes as he dismounted, the rhythmic creak of his saddle a jarring sound in the otherwise profound quiet. Seven years. Seven years of sleepless nights, of stolen moments poring over brittle scrolls, of the gnawing emptiness where Shen Yuan’s laughter used to echo. And now, here. A cluster of humble dwellings nestled against the indifferent slope of the mountains, a stark contrast to the gilded cages and echoing halls of the capital.
He’d followed whispers, fragments of rumors carried on the wind like dandelion seeds. A man who lived simply, who asked for nothing, who sometimes, on the coldest nights, would appear at the edge of a village, offer a helping hand with a broken plow or a sick child, and then vanish with the dawn. A man with eyes that held the ghost of a smile, but never the full bloom.
He found him by the woodpile. The afternoon sun, weak and diffused by the lingering haze of late autumn, slanted across the scene. Shen Yuan, leaner, harder, his once bright tunic faded and mended, swung an axe with a practiced, almost weary, rhythm. Each thud against the seasoned wood was a punctuation mark in the silence that had stretched between them for so long. Gu Chen’s breath hitched. It was him. The boy who had filled his solitary youth with light, now a man etched with shadows.
