The wind, sharp as a shard of ice, whipped across the desolate plains, carrying with it the scent of decay and the distant cries of hungry wolves. Seven years. Seven winters had passed since the gilded gates of the capital had slammed shut behind Shen Yuan, spitting him out into the unforgiving embrace of the Frozen Frontier. The vibrant hues that had once painted his world had leached away, leaving behind a monochrome landscape of dust and despair. He was a ghost, a specter haunting the edges of a dying empire.

He moved through villages like a wraith, his once-bright eyes now holding a perpetual, weary sadness. His hands, once deft with a sword and paintbrush, were now calloused from manual labor, his body lean and hardened by a life lived on the precipice of survival. He saved where he could, mending fences for a meager meal, tending to the sick for a grateful nod, but the warmth that had once radiated from him had long since been extinguished. Trust, that most precious commodity, had been a luxury he could no longer afford. It had been the currency of his downfall, the gilded bait that had led him to the precipice.

He traced the faint etching on the bark with a numb finger. "Always." The word, once a beacon, now felt like a cruel jest. He would laugh sometimes, a hollow, rasping sound that echoed the emptiness within him. "What a foolish oath," he'd murmur to the indifferent wind, the fallen leaves, the silent stones. He was a man stripped bare, his spirit scoured clean by the sands of suffering, leaving only the hard, unyielding core of survival.
