The air in that damp, shadowed room hung heavy, thick with the scent of stale tobacco and the metallic tang of fear. Violet, or Lise as she was known here, tasted it on her tongue, a bitter residue that clung even after the interrogator’s rough hands had released her. They had searched her, of course, their fingers probing, their eyes cold and assessing, seeking the secrets she held coiled within the folds of her worn dress, the very marrow of her bones. But they found only a frightened woman, a grieving widow, a whisper of a French Resistance fighter. They saw what they expected to see, and in that, lay her fragile shield.

She remembered the training, the relentless drills in the quiet English countryside, the instructors’ stern faces as they taught them how to endure, how to resist, how to become a ghost in occupied lands. They had spoken of the unimaginable, of the depths of human cruelty, but nothing, she knew now, could truly prepare you for the icy breath of it on your own skin. Her husband, Henri, lost to the war, a phantom limb that ached with a constant, dull pain, had been her first sacrifice. This was different. This was a deliberate offering, a gamble with her own life for the sake of a future she might never see, for the men and women who fought in the dark, their names whispered only in hushed tones.

The rough burlap of the chair scraped against her back as she sat, trying to still the tremor in her hands. Outside, the muffled sounds of the city – a distant siren, the rumble of a truck, the sharp bark of a dog – seemed impossibly distant, as if they belonged to another world, a world where the sun still shone and laughter wasn't a dangerous luxury. She closed her eyes, picturing the small cottage in the countryside, the scent of lavender and woodsmoke, Henri’s strong hand in hers. It was a memory, a fragile thing, but it was hers, and they could not take it.
