Chapter 8
The Witch's Bargain
Aaron, Lyra, and Silas rest at Morwen's safe house. Morwen agrees to guide them through the mountain pass to Thornhaven. During the journey, they encounter a patrol of shadow demons and must fight. Morwen reveals that the witch they seek is named Elara. They reach Thornhaven but discover it is under siege by vampire forces. Aaron decides to help defend the city, and the chapter ends with him charging into battle.
Aaron woke to the smell of herbs and woodsmoke. The cabin was quiet save for the crackling fire. He sat up, his muscles aching from the previous day's ordeal. Lyra was already awake, sharpening her arrows by the hearth. Silas and Morwen spoke in low voices near the window.
"You're up," Lyra said without looking. "Sleep well?"
"Well enough." Aaron stretched, feeling the shadow stir inside him. It was calmer now, but he knew it was only waiting. "What's the plan?"
