Chapter 8

The Sanctuary

Kaelen and Elara take refuge in a secluded cottage on the rocky shoreline where she first found the pendant. The battle-hardened warrior tries to navigate simple Earth things—blankets, rain, hot tea. He watches her make tea with fascination, his centuries of life making her every motion seem precious. They share quiet moments by the fire, the sound of waves crashing outside. The pendant glows softly, bridging the gap between their worlds. He feels at peace for the first time in decades.

The cottage sat on a jagged outcrop of rock, its weathered wooden walls braced against the salt wind. The sea churned below, a restless gray that matched the sky. Rain had been falling for hours, drumming a steady rhythm on the roof, and the air inside smelled of damp wood, old wool, and something faintly floral—a remnant of the dried lavender hanging in bundles near the hearth.

It was the kind of place that had been built to withstand storms, both from the sea and from the sky.

Kaelen stood by the window, his silhouette sharp against the gray light. He had not moved since they arrived. His hand rested on the frame, his gaze fixed on the horizon where the ocean met the clouds. He was listening, she realized. Not to the rain, but to something beyond it—a frequency only he could hear.
