Going AWOL

Determined to find Elara, Kaelen defies his military tracking beacons and crosses over during a subsequent slip. He chooses to hide out entirely in the human world, drawn by the bond to her coastal town. He lands in a forest near the beach, his alien armor shimmering under the pale sun. He moves carefully, learning to blend in, but his heart races with anticipation. Every step brings him closer to her. He will not let the rift separate them again.

The tracking beacon in Kaelen’s wrist pulsed a steady, measured rhythm—a heartbeat of light beneath his skin that told his commanders exactly where he stood. He pressed his thumb against it, feeling the faint vibration of the military network humming through his bones. They would be watching. They were always watching.

But he had made his choice.

The dimensional slip opened before him like a wound in the sky, the air turning sharp and electric as the rift widened. On the other side, he could see the pale green of Earth’s trees, the soft gray of its clouds, the quiet stillness of a world that had no idea it was bleeding into another. He did not hesitate. He stepped through.
