The First Meeting
Tracking the furious, frantic pulse in his own chest, Kaelen charges through the rift with his weapon drawn, expecting a thief or enemy. The exact microsecond their eyes meet, the agonizing heat of the pendant instantly transforms into a deep, comforting, magnetic warmth. Kaelen freezes entirely. His weapon slips from his fingers. He is completely stunned and transfixed, paralyzed with absolute reverence as he looks at the fragile human girl who now holds his life force. The battlefield fades.
The air had turned to glass.
Elara felt it before she saw it—that strange, crystalline pressure building in her lungs, pressing against her skin like the moment before a lightning strike. The forest around her had gone utterly silent. No birds. No wind. Even the leaves seemed to hold their breath.
She had been walking this path for years, a narrow ribbon of dirt and pine needles that wound through the coastal woods toward the cliffs. She knew every root, every moss-covered stone, every shaft of golden light that broke through the canopy. But this light was wrong. It was too bright, too silver, like moonlight trapped inside a midday sky.
