Chapter 4

The Slip

Days later, Elara walks through a quiet, mundane local forest. The air turns static, her pendant pulsing faster. The sky rips open with a sound like tearing fabric, and her world overlaps with an alien battlefield choked with smoke, glowing flora, and strange ruins. The ground trembles. She sees creatures of light and shadow fighting in the distance. The pendant burns hot, pulling her toward the rift. She is terrified but cannot look away, sensing something—someone—on the other side.

The forest had always been her sanctuary.

Elara walked the familiar path beneath the canopy of ancient oaks, her footsteps muffled by layers of fallen leaves. Three days had passed since she found the pendant on the shoreline, since the strange heat had flooded her veins and the world had tilted sideways into something she could not name. The clasp would not open. When she pulled, the skin beneath it burned with a warning she understood without words: *Do not.*
