Chapter 14
The Reality Snap
Elara reaches the very end of her life as an elderly woman, her human heart finally taking its last, failing beat. The moment it stops, the pendant triggers a massive cosmic failsafe. Instead of passing away, reality violently fractures. Time loops entirely backward. Elara’s consciousness violently snaps back into her young, youthful body, standing right in that split-second forest rift from years ago. She is facing a timeless Kaelen, who looks exactly the same, reaching out his hand.
The last beat of Elara’s heart was not a violent thing.
It came as a whisper, a soft flutter beneath her ribs that had grown fainter with each passing season. She was old now—truly old, in the way that humans measured time. Her hair had long since turned the color of sea foam, her hands delicate as parchment, her eyes carrying the soft haze of decades lived well. She sat in a rocking chair by the window of the cottage, the same cottage on the rocky shoreline where she had once made tea for a warrior from the stars.
The afternoon light was golden, soft, filtering through the salt-streaked glass. The ocean moved beyond the cliffs, eternal and indifferent, the same waves that had hissed and boiled around a young girl’s feet eighty years ago.
