The Parting Promise
Under a sky bleeding with starlight, Kaelen uses his magic to suppress the pendant’s burning heat, turning it into a safe, normal necklace. He promises Elara he will anchor her soul to Earth, step back into his dimension, and wait. 'Live your life, Elara. Grow old, laugh, love, and see your world. I will be counting every single beat of your heart from the stars. And when the last one strikes, I will be waiting right where we started.' He steps through the rift, leaving her alone.
The sky above the cottage had turned strange. Not the bruised purple of an approaching storm, nor the soft gray of evening settling over the sea. This was something else entirely—a bleeding, shimmering expanse where the stars seemed to pulse like living things, their light spilling across the horizon in rivers of silver and gold.
Elara stood at the edge of the rocky shoreline, her bare feet pressed into the cold, damp sand. The pendant rested heavy against her collarbone, and for the first time in days, it felt calm. Quiet. As if it, too, knew what was coming.
Behind her, the cottage door creaked open. She didn’t need to turn to know who it was. The pendant thrummed once, a soft, deep pulse that matched the rhythm of his footsteps on the weathered wooden porch.
