The peace cannot last. The pendant's intense celestial energy starts to take a physical toll on Elara’s human body—she grows weak, pale, and breathless. Meanwhile, the military from Kaelen's world begins ripping through rifts to hunt him down, threatening to bring war to her doorstep. Strange lights flicker in the night sky. Elara collapses one evening, the pendant burning too bright. Kaelen realizes their time is running out. He must make an impossible choice.
The cottage had always smelled of salt and woodsmoke, but this evening the air carried something else—a metallic tang, like the air before a storm. Kaelen stood at the window, his silhouette sharp against the fading violet sky, and Elara watched him from the worn armchair she had claimed as her own. His stillness had a quality she had learned to read: not peace, but the taut quiet of a man listening to distant thunder.
She wanted to rise and go to him. Instead, she pressed her palm flat against her sternum, where the pendant rested. The obsidian felt warm, but not the deep, comforting warmth she had grown accustomed to. It was hotter. Thrumming. Like a second heart beating too fast.
“Kaelen,” she said, and her voice came out thinner than she intended. “You’re staring at nothing.”
