Elara’s hand found the heartstone in her pocket, its warmth steady against her palm. She looked at Mira, whose face was pale and streaked with dried tears. “You’ll stay here with Grandmother,” she said, her voice firm. “I’ll go to the mill alone.”
“You will do no such thing,” Maren said, stepping forward. “I did not cross years of hiding to let you walk into a trap unguarded. We go together.”
Mira shook her head. “They said only Elara. If anyone else comes, they’ll hurt my father.”
