The forest thickened as they walked, the path back to Magical Falls familiar but heavy. Elara held Elian's hand, his small fingers cold and trembling. Behind them, Kael stayed in wolf form, ears swiveling at every sound. Lyra kept close, her green light flickering at her fingertips like a candle in a draft.
Silas led the way, his ancient steps sure, but his shoulders carried a weight Elara had not seen before. He had found his grandson, yes, but the cost of that finding was written in the lines of his face.
Elian did not speak. His silver eyes, once black with Thorne's poison, now held a fragile light. He watched the trees as if expecting shadows to step out of them.
