The night air was thick with the smell of crushed stone and wet earth. Elara knelt at the edge of the collapsed quarry, her hands pressed against the cold ground. The pulse in her chest had quieted to a steady hum, but it was still there, threading through her like a second heartbeat. Behind her, Lyra held her parents, whispering apologies and reassurances in a voice that cracked with relief. Kael helped Silas staunch the blood from a gash on his side, while Mira stood guard at the treeline, her wand glowing faintly.
Seraphine didn't move from Elara's side. She watched her daughter with an expression that was part pride, part sorrow. "You did the right thing."
"I let him go." Elara's voice was flat. "He took the entity with him."
