Chapter 13: The Hollow Below
Elara and her group follow the tremor into the forest, where they find Thorne has tunneled into the ancient prison beneath the falls. A confrontation occurs, but Thorne escapes after wounding Silas. Elara discovers she can enter the prison and speak with her father's essence. The entity stirs, and Thorne reveals he has taken Lyra's parents hostage.
The night swallowed them whole. Elara led the way, her pulse a compass pulling toward the source of the tremor. Behind her, Lyra’s footsteps were quick and steady, Mira’s breath hitching every few paces. Kael kept a flame cupped in his palm, casting jagged shadows across the trees. Silas moved like a phantom, silent and watchful. Seraphine brought up the rear, her eyes scanning for traps.
"The tremors are coming from the old quarry," Seraphine said, her voice low. "It’s two miles east of the falls. I never suspected he’d dig there."
"He’s been planning this for years," Silas replied. "We’ve only seen the surface."
