The Heart of the Falls
Elara, Lyra, and Kael race to the falls as the full moon rises. Thorne has begun his ritual and reveals he has taken Kael's younger sister, Mira, hostage. Elara uses the pulse to enter the falls' magic, freeing Mira, but Thorne siphons the released energy. Silas arrives with neutral wizards who oppose Thorne, leading to a standoff. Elara realizes Thorne's true goal is to become a god, not just to elevate magic.
The ground blurred beneath Elara's feet. She ran faster than she ever had, the pulse in her chest a frantic drumbeat leading her toward the falls. Lyra stayed at her side, breath ragged but matching her stride. Kael pulled ahead, his longer legs eating up the forest path.
Behind them, the fire still smoldered. The sirens had faded into the distance, humans dealing with the aftermath of a blaze they'd never understand. But the sky told a different story—gray and low, the unnatural clouds Thorne had summoned pressing down like a held breath.
"He's already there," Kael called back. "I can feel him drawing from the falls. It's like a heartbeat beneath the earth."
