The air in the old oak grove felt different. It wasn’t the crisp, autumn chill that usually bit at my cheeks, nor the warm, lazy buzz of summer insects. This was a stillness, a profound quiet that settled deep in my bones, a hush that felt expectant, like the world was holding its breath. Lily floated beside me, her translucent form shimmering like heat haze on a summer road, but today, her glow seemed softer, more subdued. We’d spent weeks ticking off items from her impossibly long, impossibly silly bucket list. We’d mastered the art of the perfect ice cream cone (a messy, drippy triumph), braved the deafening roar of a rock concert (Lily’s delighted shrieks had nearly knocked out a security guard), and even attempted to teach a very confused squirrel to juggle acorns (he’d stolen them and run). Lily drifted closer, her ethereal fingers brushing against my arm. It wasn’t a cold touch, not anymore. It was more like a sigh of cool air, a whisper of memory. “I think so, Arthur,” she replied, her voice a melody tinged with a sadness that mirrored my own. Her eyes, usually sparkling with mischief, were wide and a little watery, reflecting the dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves. “It feels… right. Like a really good book that’s reached its last page.”
