The scent of aged paper and forgotten ink clung to Boniface like a second skin. It was a familiar perfume, one he’d cultivated over years spent in the hushed sanctity of libraries and the dusty embrace of archives. This particular archive, tucked away in a forgotten wing of the city’s oldest university, felt even more ancient, more saturated with the quiet hum of history. The Archivist, a figure as still and weathered as the tomes they guarded, had granted him access with a nod that was both permission and a gentle warning. “Some stories,” they had murmured, their voice a dry rustle of leaves, “prefer to remain undisturbed.”

He moved with a practiced quiet, his fingers brushing against the spines of leather-bound volumes, his eyes scanning titles that spoke of forgotten lineages, obscure legal precedents, and local histories long superseded. The Archivist had directed him towards a specific section, a neglected corner filled with municipal records from a period that predated even his most ambitious research projects. “There,” the Archivist had indicated, with a gesture that encompassed a towering shelf, “you might find… echoes.”
