Boniface has his first direct encounter with Silas Vane and his mercenary, Captain Thorne. They reveal their ruthless intentions, seeking to claim the ruins' secrets for themselves.
The air, thick with the scent of damp earth and the persistent hum of unseen insects, grew heavy. Boniface, his heart thrumming a frantic rhythm against his ribs, pressed onward. The jungle, which had seemed a wild, untamed beast in the previous days, now felt like a cage, its leafy bars closing in. The map, its edges softened by sweat and the relentless humidity, felt less like a guide and more like a gauntlet. He’d been following its cryptic lines for what felt like an eternity, the whispers of the ruins a siren song that had lured him deep into this emerald labyrinth.
He paused, not for rest, but to listen. The usual symphony of the jungle—the screech of unseen monkeys, the rustle of leaves, the distant call of birds—was muted, replaced by a subtle, almost imperceptible vibration that seemed to emanate from the very ground beneath his boots. It was the whispers, he was sure of it, growing stronger, more insistent, pulling him toward their source.
Suddenly, a sharp crack echoed through the dense foliage, a sound utterly alien to the natural world. Boniface froze, his hand instinctively tightening around the hilt of his machete. He scanned the undergrowth, his eyes sharp, searching for the source of the disturbance. It wasn't the snap of a branch under a wild boar's hoof, nor the clumsy descent of a monkey. This was deliberate, measured.
