The sun, a molten eye in the bleached sky, beat down with a relentless fury. Dust, fine as powdered bone, coated everything, clinging to the parched earth, to the wilting leaves of the acacia trees, to the very air that Obi breathed. He stood at the edge of the village, a solitary silhouette against the shimmering haze, his gaze fixed on the distant, broken line of the mountains, a jagged promise of what lay beyond. The weight of his people’s thirst pressed upon him, a physical ache in his chest, a constant thrumming beneath the skin.

He had spoken with Anya, her hands cool and steady as she pressed a poultice of dried herbs to his fevered brow the night before. Her eyes, usually so clear and full of the earth’s wisdom, held a shadow of unease. “The land weeps, Obi,” she had murmured, her voice a low lament. “It weeps for what has been taken, and for what is yet to be asked.” He knew she spoke of more than just the absence of rain. She spoke of the balance, the delicate tapestry of life that was unraveling thread by thread.

Kael, too, had been a storm of restless energy, his young warrior’s spirit chafing against the slow, deliberate pace of elder counsel. “We cannot wait, Obi,” he had pleaded, his voice raw with frustration. “While we debate, our children grow weaker. I will go. I will seek a spring, a hidden stream. I will find water.” Obi had seen the desperation in the young man’s eyes, the fierce, untamed courage that mirrored a part of himself he had long since learned to temper. But Kael’s was a bravery born of impatience, a headlong rush that could lead to ruin. Obi’s own path, he knew, had to be different. It had to be steeped in the wisdom of the ancestors, even as it dared to venture into the uncharted territories of the unknown.
