Taji, all of ten years old with a mop of unruly curls that seemed to absorb every stray beam, pedaled his beat-up BMX with a fierce concentration. Behind him, Bryan, a year older, his face already etched with a weariness that belied his years, coasted along, a perpetual smirk playing on his lips. They were a study in contrasts, Taji the whirlwind of boundless energy, Bryan the quiet observer, but their shared history, forged in the sterile halls of the children’s treatment facility, bound them tighter than any blood relation.

It had started with video games. Day after day, Bryan would extend the invitation, his voice a persistent murmur in the sterile quiet of the day room. "Come over, Taji. My mom got the Super Nintendo. We got Mario Kart. You wanna race?" Taji, guarded and hesitant, always found an excuse. Then, one sweltering afternoon, something shifted. Maybe it was the sheer monotony of the fluorescent lights, the taste of lukewarm juice boxes, or the gnawing ache of loneliness that echoed in the empty spaces of his days. He’d walked, a determined stride belying his small frame, down the sun-drenched street that led to Bryan’s house.

From that day on, they were inseparable. The Super Nintendo became their portal to other worlds, a vibrant explosion of pixels and sound that offered an escape from the mundane. They raced virtual go-karts, battled Bowser, and explored fantastical landscapes, their laughter echoing through Bryan’s small, cluttered living room. But their adventures weren’t confined to the screen. The real world, with its own set of thrills and perils, beckoned.
