The air in the laboratory, once sterile and crisp, now hung thick with a cloying sweetness, a scent so pervasive it coated the back of my throat like spun sugar. It was a perfume of my own making, a fragrant testament to my descent. The sterile white walls were no longer bare; they were adorned with streaks of vibrant color, remnants of hasty, panicked clean-ups that only served to highlight the grotesque artistry of my work. My creations, my living candies, were everywhere.

They moved with a disconcerting grace, their forms a morbid celebration of confectionery. Patient Zero, once a kindly retired librarian, now stood encased in a shimmering, caramel shell, her eyes, still eerily human, peering out from beneath a hardened glaze. I had sought to understand the anomaly, to unravel the secrets of elevated blood sugar. Instead, I had birthed a grotesque pantheon, each one a monument to my hubris. They were no longer patients; they were specimens, exhibits in a museum of my own madness.
