Alex grapples with self-doubt and the moral implications of their nature. Lena, Alex's best friend, notices the changes and grows concerned, unaware of the supernatural threat.
The mirror offered no comfort. It showed Alex, a reflection that was both familiar and terrifyingly alien. The eyes, usually a warm hazel, seemed to hold a deeper, more ancient fire, a flicker that spoke of things Alex didn't want to acknowledge. Doubts, like creeping vines, tightened their grip around Alex’s heart. Was this truly who they were now? A creature of the night, a predator? The thought sent a shiver down their spine, a chill that had nothing to do with the late autumn air seeping through the poorly sealed window of their small apartment.
Silas’s words, once a beacon of hope, now echoed with a disquieting ambiguity. "Embrace your nature, Alex. It is a gift, not a curse." But what kind of gift required one to feast on the very life force of others? The hunger, a gnawing emptiness that had become a constant companion, was a stark reminder of the chasm that had opened between Alex and their former life. It was a hunger that Silas assured them could be satisfied without causing harm, with blood banks and… other, more abstract sources. But the primal urge, the instinct that whispered in the dead of night, was a terrifying force to contend with.
Alex traced the faint scar on their palm, a relic of a childhood bicycle accident. It had healed with unnatural speed, a fact they’d dismissed as a fluke. Now, every unexplained occurrence, every moment of heightened senses, every fleeting glimpse of unnatural speed, felt like a clue in a puzzle they were desperately trying to ignore. The shame was a heavy cloak. They felt like a fraud, a pretender in their own skin. How could they possibly protect Lena, their anchor in this storm, when they couldn't even protect themselves from their own burgeoning darkness?
