The air in the abandoned cathedral was heavy, thick with the scent of decay and something else, something acrid and metallic that I was beginning to recognize as the tang of my own fear. Moonlight, a stark, unforgiving blade, sliced through the shattered rose window, painting a ghostly tableau on the cracked flagstones. Seraphina stood at the altar, her silhouette a predatory slash against the ethereal glow. She was impossibly ancient, her beauty a cruel, sculpted thing that promised oblivion. Her eyes, when they met mine, were like chips of obsidian, cold and devoid of any warmth. Silas was a shadow at my side, his presence a silent, vibrating tension. He hadn’t spoken since we’d arrived, his gaze fixed on Seraphina, a battleground of emotions warring behind his stoic facade.

“You have come,” Seraphina’s voice was a silken caress, laced with an ancient power that vibrated in my very bones. “And you have brought the betrayer with you. How… touching.”

My breath hitched. Betrayer. The word hung in the air, heavy with unspoken history. Silas flinched, a minuscule tremor that only I, attuned to his every subtle shift, would notice.
